US employers unveiled 75,891 layoffs in August, the highest monthly total in five months and a threefold increase from July, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The tech sector saw the most cuts with 39,563 layoffs. Despite this surge, layoffs are down 3.7% year-to-date. VP Andrew Challenger commented, “August’s surge reflects growing economic uncertainty and shifting market dynamics.”

The Federal Reserve faces a "very slim" margin for a soft landing, says Daniel Zhao, lead economist at Glassdoor. Private job openings have dropped to their lowest since 2021, while jobless claims are slightly under expectations. Zhao anticipates a 25-basis-point rate cut in September, possibly a 50-basis-point cut if August's jobs report is poor. Zhao stated, "The margin of error is very slim."
