Scientists are emphasizing the urgent need for emission reduction and foreseeing catastrophic consequences if fossil fuel use continues. Scientist Anders Levermann warns  "Staying on the path we are currently on will lead to catastrophic consequences."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stressed the severity of the breach, stating, "There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition," to justify the harsh penalty.
