📉 U.S. GDP Grows 1.6% in Q1, Below Estimates Amid Rising Inflation

The U.S. economy grew at a modest 1.6% last quarter, underperforming expectations due to weak trade and export data, which shaved approximately 1.2 percentage points off GDP growth. Despite this slowdown, core inflation exceeded predictions, climbing to 3.7%. EY’s Gregory Daco noted, “The underlying growth mix continues to signal robust momentum, but demand growth is gently cooling leading to easing inflationary pressures.”

Alphabet's Q1 earnings surpassed expectations at $1.89 per share, with revenue reaching $80.54 billion, boosted by YouTube and Google Cloud. It declared its first cash dividend at 20 cents per share and authorized a $70 billion buyback as Net income jumped 57% to $23.66 billion.

ByteDance might shut down TikTok in the U.S. rather than sell, to keep its crucial algorithms. Despite over a billion users worldwide, TikTok contributes little to ByteDance's overall revenue and operates at a loss. U.S. laws demand a sale by January 19, 2025. TikTok’s CEO, Shou Zi Chew, confidently states: "We expect to win a legal challenge to block this legislation."
