On April 11th, 1815, a monumental volcanic event took place situated along the northern coastline of Indonesia's Sumbawa island, erupted in a cataclysmic explosion. It is the largest volcanic eruption recorded in history killing about 10,000 people. It is now 2,851 meters (9,354 feet) high, having lost much of its top in the 1815 eruption.
