📉 US Firms Report Slower Job Growth Amid Economic Slowdown, Fed Survey Reveals 

US firms report weaker hiring as economic growth slows, according to the Fed's "Beige Book." From mid-July to late August, nine of twelve districts saw stagnant or declining activity, with the unemployment rate rising to 4.3% in July. Hiring slowed, and firms cut shifts and hours amid modestly increasing inflation pressures. The Fed stated, “Employers were more selective with their hires and less likely to expand their workforces.” 

📉 Harris Proposes 28% Capital Gains Tax, Diverges from Biden

Vice President Kamala Harris proposed raising the capital gains tax to 28% for individuals earning over $1 million annually, diverging from President Biden's 39.6% plan. The current rate is 20%, with Biden's proposal including a 5% investment tax, creating a top rate of 44.6%. Harris's plan aims for an all-in top rate of 33%. She stated, "We will tax capital gains at a rate that rewards investment in America’s innovators."

Russia secretly acquired sensitive dual-use technologies from India through a $1 billion deal, targeting components for drones and missiles. In October 2022, Moscow planned to establish facilities in India to secure these goods, funded by oil revenue paid in rupees. The Russian Consortium for Foreign Economic Activity led the operation deepening Russo-Indian ties amid rising trade, which reached $66 billion in 2023/24.

Ukraine is undergoing a significant government reshuffle with the resignation of seven senior officials, including Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. 🌍 Global Plastic Pollution Hits 57 Million Tons Annually

Globally, 57 million tons of plastic waste are produced each year, with over 66% coming from the Global South. India is the largest contributor at 10.2 million tons, followed by Nigeria (3.7 million tons), Indonesia (3.6 million tons), and China (2.3 million tons). Poor waste management is a major cause. Costas Velis, Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Leeds stated, “We already have a huge dispersal problem.”

🚀 OpenAI Co-Founder Sutskever's AI Startup SSI Secures $1 Billion for Safety Innovations

OpenAI Co-Founder Ilya Sutskever's new venture, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), has raised $1 billion to advance safe AI technologies. SSI, with a team split between Palo Alto and Tel Aviv, will invest in computing power and top talent aiming to develop AI systems that exceed human capabilities while ensuring safety. Sutskever said, “We’re focusing on a different path to achieve something special in AI.”

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are set to debate on September 10 in Philadelphia, following an agreement on ABC’s rules. The 90-minute event will feature live microphones only during each candidate’s turn, no audience, no notes or props, two-minute answers, and rebuttals, with extra time for follow-ups. Trump stated, “Americans want to hear both candidates present their competing visions.”  

🔔 Georgia Community Grieves Loss of 2 Students, 2 Teachers in Year’s Deadliest School Shooting

Georgia is mourning the deaths of two students and two teachers in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder. The 14-year-old shooter, Colt Gray, used an AR-15-style rifle, killing Mason Schermerhorn, Christian Angulo, Richard Aspinwall, and Christina Irimie. Nine others were injured. The school had received a threat earlier but took no preventive action. All Barrow County schools are closed.

🇺🇸 US Targets Russian Disinformation with Charges and Sanctions Ahead of November Election  

The Biden administration seized 32 Kremlin-run websites and charged RT employees Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva for covertly funding a Tennessee media firm to spread pro-Russia content. This move, which includes sanctions and visa restrictions, targets Russian disinformation ahead of the November election. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized, "We will have no tolerance for attempts by authoritarian regimes to exploit our democratic systems."
