On April 12, 1981, NASA launched the inaugural mission of its Space Shuttle program, known as STS-1 or Space Transportation System-1. The space shuttle Columbia took off, marking the first orbital flight of the program. Piloted by mission commanders John W. Young and Robert L. Crippen, the shuttle completed 37 orbits around the Earth over 54.5 hours.
